First I found a review article from Daniel Levitin's group page, titled " The Neurochemistry of Music". As you know, I am a music lover and really fascinated about how a bunch of frequencies with regular patterns (music) can affect our mood, memory and motor systems that much. In this article, Mona Lisa and Daniel demonstrate the preliminary results of the connection between music and neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurochemistry of music is a new emerging field and only limited number of labs, currently in US, are working on it. As it is known conventionally, music is an art, an entertaining tool and it does not affect our daily life very much. I think we have this idea partially is because that music is part of the entertainment industry where people try to earn money from. However, if you think it twice, music is one of the most ancient tool for communication and people not only can share their thoughts through it, but also feelings and souls. Music also synchronize people even they cannot communicate through language. Imagine if people from all over the world are singing the same melody together at the same time, maybe we can soften the hatred and shorten the distance and realize that we are one giant species that need to share, tolerant and understand each other.
Well, with the advance of technologies, singing together with the rest of the world is feasible and this is the second thing I found out, through TED talk, the Virtual Choir. (Here is an introduction of the TED talk on this topic) Although I am not a big fan of the song they sang, the idea is amazing and the power from the music sung by the singers on stage and additional 30 different singers from 30 different countries is magnificent. Please take a look at it yourself and I believe you can feel the power too.
